will you leave it on the desk?

my friend Wendie posted this on her myspace. it made me cry.

DON'T LEAVE IT ON THE DESK

There was a certain Professor of Religion named Dr Christianson, a studious man who taught at a small college in the Western United States. Dr. Christianson taught the required survey course in Christianity at this particular institution.
Every student was required to take this course hisfreshman year, regardless of his or her major. Although Dr. Christianson tried hard to communicate the essence of the gospel in his class, he found that most of his students looked upon thecourse as nothing but required drudgery. Despite his best efforts, most students refused to take Christianity seriously.This year, Dr. Christianson had a special student named Steve.
Steve was only a freshman, but was studying with the intent of going onto seminary for the ministry. Steve was popular, he was well liked, and he was an imposing physical specimen. He was now the starting center on the schoolfootball team, and was the best student in the professor's class.
One day, Dr. Christianson asked Steve to stay after class so he could talk with him. "How many push-ups can you do?" Steve said, "I do about 200 every night." "200? That's pretty good, Steve," Dr. Christianson said. "Do you think you could do 300?"Steve replied, "I don't know.... I've never done 300at a time.""Do you think you could?" again asked Dr. Christianson."Well, I can try," said Steve."Can you do 300 in sets of 10? I have a class project in mind and I need you to do about 300 push-ups in sets of ten for this to work. Can you do it? I need you to tell me you can do it," said the professor.
Steve said, "Well... I think I can...yeah, I can do it"Dr. Christianson said, "Good! I need you to do this on Friday. Let me explain what I have in mind."Friday came and Steve got to class early and sat in the front of the room.
When class started, the professor pulled out a big box of donuts. No, these weren't the normal kinds of donuts, they were the extra fancy BIG kind, with cream centers and frosting swirls. Everyone was pretty excited it was Friday, the last class of the day, and they were going to get an early start on the weekend with a party in Dr. Christianson's class.
Dr. Christianson went to the first girl in the first row and asked, "Cynthia, do you want to have one of these donuts?"Cynthia said, "Yes."
Dr. Christianson then turned to Steve and asked, "Steve, would you do ten push-ups so that Cynthia can have a donut?""Sure." Steve jumped down from his desk to do a quick ten.
Then Steve again sat in his desk. Dr. Christianson put a donut on Cynthia's desk.
Dr. Christianson then went to Joe, the next person, and asked, "Joe, do you want a donut?"Joe said, "Yes." Dr. Christianson asked, "Steve would you do ten push-ups so Joe can have a donut?"
Steve did ten push-ups, Joe got a donut.
And so it went, down the first aisle, Steve did ten push-ups for every person before they got their donut.Walking down the second aisle, Dr. Christianson came to Scott.
Scott was on the basketball team, and in as good condition as Steve. He was very popular and never lacking for female companionship.
When the professor asked, "Scott do you want a donut?" Scott's reply was, "Well, can I do my own push-ups?"Dr. Christianson said, "No, Steve has to do them."
Then Scott said, "Well, I don't want one then."Dr. Christianson shrugged and then turned to Steve and asked, "Steve, would you do ten push-ups so Scott can have a donut he doesn't want?"
With perfect obedience Steve started to do ten push-ups. Scott said, "HEY! I said I didn't want one!"
Dr. Christianson said, "Look! this is my classroom, my class, my desks, and these are my donuts. Just leave it on the desk if you don't want it."
And he put a donut on Scott's desk.Now by this time, Steve had begun to slow down a little. He just stayed on the floor between sets because it took too much effort to be getting up and down . You could start to see a little perspiration coming out around his brow.Dr. Christianson started down the third row.
Now the students were beginning to get a little angry. Dr. Christianson asked Jenny, "Jenny, do you want a donut?"
Sternly, Jenny said, "No."Then Dr. Christianson asked Steve, "Steve, would you do ten more push-ups so Jenny can have a donut that she doesn't want?"
Steve did ten....Jenny got a donut.
By now, a growing sense of uneasiness filled the room. The students were beginning to say "No" and there were all these uneaten donuts on the desks. Steve also had to really put forth a lot of extra effort to get these push-ups done for each donut.
There began to be a small pool ofsweat on the floor beneath his face, his arms and brow were beginning to get red because of the physical effort involved.
Dr. Christianson asked Robert, who was the most vocal unbeliever in the class, to watch Steve do each push up to make sure he did the full ten push-ups in a set because he couldn't bear to watch all of Steve's work for all of those uneaten donuts.
He sent Robert over to where Steve was so Robert could count the set and watch Steve closely.
Dr. Christianson started down the fourth row. During his class, however, some students from other classes had wandered in and sat down on the steps along the radiators that ran down the sides of the room.
When the professor realized this, he did a quick count and saw that nowthere were 34students in the room.
He started to worry if Steve would be able to make it.
Dr. Christianson went on to the next person and the next and the next. Near the end of that row, Steve was really having a rough time.
He was taking a lot more time to complete each set.
Steve asked Dr Christianson, "Do I have to make my nose touch on each one?"Dr. Christianson thought for a moment, "Well, they're your push-ups. You are in charge now. You can do them any way that you want."
And Dr. Christianson went on.A few moments later, Jason, a recent transfer student, came to the room and was about to come in when all the students yelled in one voice, "NO! Don't come in! Stay out!"
Jason didn't know what was going on.
Steve picked up his head and said, "No, let him come."
Professor Christianson said, "You realize that if Jason comes in you will have to do ten push-ups for him?"
Steve said, "Yes, let him come in. Give him a donut"
Dr. Christianson said, "Okay, Steve, I'll let you get Jason's out of the way right now. Jason, do you want a donut?"J
ason, new to the room, hardly knew what was going on. "Yes," he said, "give me a donut."
"Steve, will you do ten push-ups so that Jason can have a donut?" Steve did ten push-ups very slowly and with great effort.
Jason, bewildered, was handed a donut and sat down.
Dr. Christianson finished the fourth row, and then started on those visitors seated by the heaters. Steve's arms were now shaking with each push-up in a struggle to lift himself against the force of gravity. By this time sweat was profusely dropping off of his face, there was no sound excepthis heavy breathing; there was not a dry eye in the room. The very last two students in the room were two young women, both cheerleaders, and very popular.
Dr. Christianson went to Linda, the second to last, and asked, "Linda, do you want a doughnut?"Linda said, very sadly, "No, thank you."
Professor Christianson quietly asked, "Steve, would you do ten push-ups so that Linda can have a donut she doesn't want?"
Grunting from the effort, Steve did ten very slow push-ups for Linda.Then Dr Christianson turned to the last girl, Susan. "Susan, do you want a donut?"
Susan, with tears flowing down her face, began to cry. "Dr. Christianson, why can't I help him?"
Dr. Christianson, with tears of his own, said, "No, Steve has to do it alone, I have given him this task and he is in charge of seeing that everyone has an opportunity for a donut whether they want it or not.
When I decided to have a party this last day of class, I looked at my grade book. Steve here is the only student with a perfect grade. Everyone else has failed a test, skipped class, or offered me inferior work.
Steve told me that in football practice, when a player messes up he must do push-ups. I told Steve that none of you could come to my party unless he paid the price by doing your push ups. He and I made a deal for your sakes.""Steve, would you do ten push-ups so Susan can have a donut?"
As Steve very slowly finished his last push-up, with the understanding that he had accomplished all that was required of him, having done 350 push-ups, his arms buckled beneath him and he fell to the floor.
Dr. Christianson turned to the room and said. "And so it was, that our Savior, Jesus Christ, on the cross, plead to the Father, 'into thy hands I commend my spirit.' With the understanding that He had done everything that was required of Him, He yielded up His life. And like some of thosein this room, many of us leave the gift on the desk, uneaten."
Two students helped Steve up off the floor and to a seat, physically exhausted, but wearing a thin smile. "Well done, good and faithful servant," said the professor, adding "Not all sermons are preached in words."
Turning to his class, the professor said, "My wish is that you might understand and fully comprehend all the riches of grace and mercy that have been given to you through the sacrifice of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ.
He spared not only His Begotten Son, but gave Him up for us all, for the whole Church, now and forever. Whether or not we choose to accept His gift to us, the price has been paid." "Wouldn't you be foolish and ungrateful to leave it lying on the desk?"Share this with someone. It's bound to touch their heart and demonstrate Salvation in a very special way.

Bug Speaks!

Here goes my first attempt at a blog....
Don't you love when you decide how God is supposed to act in certain situations. When we build this...well, false idol, really, why should we be surprised when He doesn't fit in our box? And then we are left with our doubts, and in worse situations, our accusations. So this clearly is coming from a situation I'm dealing with. The answer: Count my blessings. Literally. I'm going to be at it awhile....
It's an interesting thing when people don't want to hear anything about the gospel. I was talking to one of my bosses yesterday and I asked him if the company made them tuck in their shirts. I had a feeling that they did because I had seen three supervisors standing together and I noticed they all had their [polo] shirts tucked in. So my boss told me that they made him tuck their shirts in, and when I asked why he told me they were supposed to be professional. I told him no offense, but they're the most unprofessional of the three shifts I've worked on. He asked why and I told him that there wasn't a supervisor I had seen that didn't cuss like a...well, you get the idea. So as we were talking he told me that the swear word he uses most is G-D. He said he likes using that one more than the F-bomb because to him, it's less offensive since he's not a believer. Of course the point isn't about the offense to him, but I didn't want to press him too hard on it. Now, admittedly, I don't do the greatest job of evangelism. It certainly doesn't come naturally to me. But here he is bringing up his unbelief. The hard part was done for me. So I asked him a couple generic questions to get started, and he really wasn't having any of it.
You have to wonder what he's been through that makes him shut down like that. It could be he lost his faith over a painful experience long ago. Maybe he was brought up atheist. Maybe he has been wronged by Christians. I've been in situations where this is the case. It's unfair. It's like people that say all men/women are evil because they had one or two bad relationships. People hold stuff against you because of something someone else did. Worse, they hold stuff against God. So what can we do? We need to make it clear that the point isn't what other people do, it's what Jesus did. It's not fair to judge a belief system by anything other than it's champion, and our champion is Jesus Christ. Second, let's not be stumbling blocks for people. Ever see Christians wield the truth like a lead pipe, beating people over the head with it? I have, and I used to be one. There is a "more excellent way", to make a paraphrase.
Another problem I have is that people associate Christianity with the Republican Party. You can see why in a lot of issues...abortion, gay marriage, etc. But Jesus was no politician. It seems he separated Himself from that whole thing. "Give to Caesar what is Caesar's"...He had more important things to deal with, and frankly, so do we. It's good to vote, but I do not want to be associated with a political party. I want to be associated with Christ. Incidentally, shouldn't we as believers be environmentalists? This is God's creation we're talking about. Who is the better party on that issue? Hopefully you see what I mean.
That's enough out of me...not too bad for a first-timer I hope.

Message Strikes Again!

Have I mentioned how much I love my page a day calendar? the verse one...it rocks.

Today:
Since God assured us, "I'll never let you down, never walk off and leave you," we can boldly quote "God is there, ready to help; I'm fearless no matter waht. Who or what can get to me?" Hebrews 13:5-6 MSG

So when I'm sitting there looking at mockups of centerpieces, wondering if the cake tastes as good as it looks....wondering how on earth we are going to figure all of this out and pay for everything that needs to be paid for, live on our own, sell the house, afford this, find that....and essentially overwhelm the snot out of myself.....there's the deep calming breath..."Since God assured us I will never let you down, never walk off and leave you..." I can breathe....somehow it will work out...I just have to trust the timing.

My little sister got her first broken heart this week....I ached for her...but was reminded as I told her that timing is amazing.....that it's true.....God's never late, never early and pardon the reference to a wizard but it's like Gandalf said 'he arrives precisely when he intends to'

I guess we all have an inner three year old that wants the why, we want it now, and it had better be good! We can't possibly wait! We need it NOW!

Prayer

Today is the National Day of Prayer - a day when everyone remembers to set aside a few minutes and pray....John & Denny talked about how we have that opportunity 24/7/365....so why don't we take it?
A direct line of communication with the author and finisher of our faith, our creator - the one who wrote the owners manual....and we set it aside....we say "all we can do is pray."
That's GREAT! Prayer is very powerful.
My cousin's college roommate had a poster on her ceiling so that it was the first thing she saw when she got up in the morning. "Prayer should be our first resource, not our last resort."

In the devotional I'm reading, right now we're on prayer - the prayer of Daniel, the Lord's prayer - what it means, and just how we need to be praying, to invoke the power of God's name and to trust that what we ask in His name, under His will is DONE.

I'm not much on canned prayers - but when I was at St. Bonaventure, the prayer of St. Francis was drilled into us - and I really like the words:
Lord, make me an instrument of your peace,
Where there is hatred, let me sow love;
where there is injury, pardon;
where there is doubt, faith;
where there is despair, hope;
where there is darkness, light;
where there is sadness, joy;
O Divine Master, grant that I may not so much seek to be consoled as to console;
to be understood as to understand;
to be loved as to love.

For it is in giving that we receive;
it is in pardoning that we are pardoned;
and it is in dying that we are born to eternal life.

A good thought to keep....and of course, let me close with the words of our Lord, as He taught us:
5"And when you pray, do not be like the hypocrites, for they love to pray standing in the synagogues and on the street corners to be seen by men. I tell you the truth, they have received their reward in full. 6But when you pray, go into your room, close the door and pray to your Father, who is unseen. Then your Father, who sees what is done in secret, will reward you. 7And when you pray, do not keep on babbling like pagans, for they think they will be heard because of their many words. 8Do not be like them, for your Father knows what you need before you ask him.

9"This, then, is how you should pray:
" 'Our Father in heaven,
hallowed be your name,
10your kingdom come,
your will be done
on earth as it is in heaven.
11Give us today our daily bread.
12Forgive us our debts,
as we also have forgiven our debtors.
13And lead us not into temptation,
but deliver us from the evil one.[a]' 14For if you forgive men when they sin against you, your heavenly Father will also forgive you. 15But if you do not forgive men their sins, your Father will not forgive your sins.

Matthew 6:5-13, NIV

yes. I got bored....or something....

so....I tried to discover things about myself...

You Are Chocolate Chip Ice Cream

You are kind, popular, and generous.

You tend to be successful at anything you try.

A social butterfly, you are great at entertaining a crowd.

You are most compatible with strawberry ice cream.

hmm...I'm detecting a theme with me and chocolate chips...

You Are a Chocolate Chip Cookie

Traditional and conservative, most people find you comforting.

You're friendly and easy to get to know. This makes you very popular - without even trying!

LOL....

You Are Chinese Food

Exotic yet ordinary.

People think they've had enough of you, but they're back for more in an hour.

Ok, ok ok...last one....for now...(and thank you Ernie for sharing this page with the finger test, lol)

Reeses Peanut Butter Cups

Very popular, one of you is not enough.

Verse of the Day Calendar Inspires Again!

"Now to him who can keep you on your feet, standing tall in his bright presence, fresh and celebrating - to our one God, our only Savior, through Jesus Christ, our Master, be glory, majesty, strength, and rule before all time, and now, and to the end of time." Jude 1:24-25 Message Version

So...as you know, we took Bug's car in and prayed hard....
Then we picked it up Saturday and learned that the whole problem had been a bad vaccume hose. How cool is our God???

Yesterday, we celebrated his mom's 60th birthday with stuffed shells and a hockey game...was fun....even though our beloved Sabres lost....rather tragic, but I'm sure we will get past it ;-)

and it's SUNNY in Buffalo on a Monday morning....
this has to be a good sign, right?

Oh yeah...and we picked out our wedding cake...it's very "us" unique :-D
and no...I wasn't able to confiscate his camera to get the pictures of everything (Christmas, Valentines, Weddings, and our adventure...)....he said he'd get to it later.....hopefully he means this week.....

Rainy Saturday All to Myself!

OK, so here it is Saturday, it's rainy, my roommate is in Greece for a couple of weeks traveling the trails Paul did (how freaking cool is that?? I hope she's taking a ton of pics and will let me share some)
Darryl has my car at work since his is at the shop hopefully being fixed so it no longer stalls at red lights...
so here I am....all alone with a computer, some thoughts and a ton of forced free time. (Sad when it has to be forced to use it....)

And really wishing that I had Bug's camera.... A) so I can share all these pics I keep promising; 2) so I can show off my handiwork! and d) I got "new" specs...
that was a trip....finally broke down and went to the eye doc.....I ask if I can keep my frames as I'm quite fond of them (I have a weirdly tiny head and adult sized frames don't fit...so I shopped forever and paid more than I wanted to for these, but they fit and they are cute so I wanna keep them dangit!) He tells me that it's possible....wise ehhhh....then he tells me that they have to be shipped out of NY, be put into a machine to trace the shape so the lenses can be cut (which is different from new frames how?) and then shipped back and there is a cost involved. So I'm thinking a few hundred and maybe I should pick new glasses...nope...$25. So I kept my little bronze frames....and now I can see again.
Dude....I didn't realize just how much my eyes had been compensating...I put my new eyes on and felt like I was walking on a platform....made me a little seasick but once my eyes realized "hey we don't have to work this hard!" it got much better and now I can see and my head doesn't ache, so that's gotta be something, right?

so I got up, brewed some creme brulee coffee, mopped the kitchen, vacuumed up what I didn't get a chance to do last weekend and put in a load of laundry. Later I intend to take a bath and give myself a manicure and pedicure....and wish I had a camera to share because I'm feeling mischievous and creative so my nails are probably going to come out fun.....

I'm also thinking that the saxophone needs to come out of the box today. Just before my surgery (Sept. and Kasey promises she's sending recovery pics for your laughing pleasure...but ya know....) I began playing again with the intention of switching from a vocalist to a saxophonist in our worship band....I haven't played a lot since high school (the heart issue that is no longer an issue (btw, did I ever share about that?) caused major problems trying to play so I didn't....it was sad)
but anyway, I started to play again and then I had to have my gall bladder out and well....playing a wood wind and having incisions in your abdomen do not go well together.....so I stopped again....but now I'm pretty much healed up with only the occasional pull from the scar tissue...so I think it's time to bring it out again....this should be fun.....anyone who has ever played a woodwind is shaking with laughter right now because they know how far gone my armature is...(and I'm not sure I spelled that right but for the non-musicians in the group it has to do with the muscles around my mouth that need to remain taught while I play and not allow air in to goof with the sound....doesn't take long for these muscles to relax and not hold as tight, which produces a whiny sound...hey you learned something!!)
but anyway....
playing should be rather interesting and aw shucks, I don't have blue tooth on any of these computers so there won't be any videos....;-)

well there's my "monster" post for a rainy Saturday....I think a bubble bath and a book sound good...right after some baked fries for breakfast (nope, I haven't changed) =Þ

May your day be blessed! May you hear God whispering your name in the wind, may you feel his hand on your face in the sun, may you see His working in everything you set your eyes upon today....May you be wrapped up in His arms like a perfcect down comforter and may your day be complete with JOY!

Yup!

Ever feel like life is a roller coaster? As I read a post about burning huts I thought to myself - yup. been there. ...and so has she....and I wondered why we go through the same fires over and over....and then I was reminded of what exactly the process of purifying gold is like...the gold is melted....then remelted...and again and again until all of the impurities float up and are skimmed away until it is pure and without spot....and God desires that for each of us...
I know I certainly wish there were an easier way....like a loofah and plenty of bath & body works bottles....and a hot bubble bath...yeah....that would be great....
but what would I learn? to be comfortable where I am rather than to strive to keep putting that foot forward.
We're taking Bug's car into the shop today....he just got this new job....and then comes the rain...but then I rejoiced....provision. Manna.
Amazing what God does...
and I'm ashamed to admit that most of the time I flat out miss it....
so here's to searching for the blessings.....

Some Wonderful Thoughts

Hebrews 11:1:

NIV: Now faith is being sure of what we hope for and certain of what we do not see

Message: 1 -2The fundamental fact of existence is that this trust in God, this faith, is the firm foundation under everything that makes life worth living. It's our handle on what we can't see. The act of faith is what distinguished our ancestors, set them above the crowd.

KJV: Now faith is the substance of things hoped for, the evidence of things not seen.

John 14:26:

NIV: But the Counselor, the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in my name, will teach you all things and will remind you of everything I have said to you.

Message: 25 -27"I'm telling you these things while I'm still living with you. The Friend, the Holy Spirit whom the Father will send at my request, will make everything plain to you. He will remind you of all the things I have told you. I'm leaving you well and whole. That's my parting gift to you. Peace. I don't leave you the way you're used to being left—feeling abandoned, bereft. So don't be upset. Don't be distraught.

KJV: But the Comforter, which is the Holy Ghost, whom the Father will send in my name, he shall teach you all things, and bring all things to your remembrance, whatsoever I have said unto you.

Bible.com. Gotta love it....amazing how much clearer a verse becomes just by reading a couple of different translations.....God is just cool...now who will give me an Amen to that?

Frailty of Life

Friday afternoon as I walked to lunch there was a rather large commotion on the street - fire trucks, flashing lights and a bus....and then we saw the tarps being raised around the scene - a woman had been hit and killed.

The next day I was headed to do some shopping and meet bug for dinner and a movie and got a text from our friend Wendie...her uncle had been killed the night before in a freak motorcycle accident.

I started to pray for the families of these people - amazing how frail our lives can be - how we feel invincible and then in a heartbeat - we feel vulnerable and weak.....Thank God for his assurance....his blessed hope and salvation, so that we can walk through the dark days knowing that even if that bus is headed for us - we can say "It is well with my soul."

Five years ago, Phil Hassey played that song on his violin for my brother's funeral - and I can still hear him playing and what a great comfort it brought to my heart and still does this day. "When peace like a river attendeth my way, when sorrows like sea billows roll, whatever my lot, thou hast taught me to say...It is WELL it is WELL WITH MY SOUL" (emphasis mine).

Amazing thoughts to hold onto....even in that "valley of death" we fear no evil.....

As I dragged myself from my warm bed to my freezing room this morning, I wanted nothing more than to go right back to sleep....but Monday waits for no woman! (and I've discovered that my bed gets proportionally warmer and more comfortable the closer it gets to being the time I need to get out of it.....)

So I grabbed my Bible and devotionals and set to work....and read of the amazing love and sacrifices that were made so that we could enter the promised land. I read a stern warning against neglecting the word of God and how fear and doubt kept the Israelites wandering - while Joshua and Caleb were ready to walk forward in faith and to claim their promises....they were held back by those who feared....
It encouraged me to keep stepping forward....to not let other people's fears and doubts stop me from claiming what is mine - to take hold of those promises and know that no matter what comes...It will be well with my soul.
